SUMMER 2008
PROGRESS PICTORIAL –
EAST RIVER FIELDS
This month, we are taking a look at the
progress of the East River Fields.
The final surface has been placed on
East River Fields 80 and 83.
B elow
are photos showing the condition of the
fields during construction and in July
when their new surfaces were laid.
The left field (Field 80) is a
lush natural surface field.
The right field (Field 83) is a
synthetic surface field. Play will begin
on these fields in September.
The fields pictured are
highlighted to the right.
TURF EXPERT CONSULTED ON NEW PLAYING
SURFACES
Dr. Frank Rossi, Ph. D - Turf
Specialist, Department of Horticulture
at Cornell University, serves
as a consultant to the Fields Design
Team. In this capacity, he conducts
tests on soil samples and surface
product and oversees installations.
On a recent visit, Dr. Rossi, second
from left, was joined by ( L - R)
Rick Parisi, MPFP;
Sunil Gulati, RISF Trustee
and President of the US Soccer
Federation; and
Mohamed Elwakil, Project Manager,
Economic Development Corporation;
for a tour of East River Fields.
LOCAL GROUPS GET A SNEAK PEEK AT
RANDALL’S ISLAND
PROGRESS
RISF has recently hosted “behind the
scenes” tours of Randall’s
Island
Park so that park users
and members of community Board 11 can
view first-hand the progress of the
Parks construction projects and
improvements.
The Salt March and Freshwater
Wetlands sites, the field construction
areas, the Hell Gate Pathway Design, the
Bronx Shore Wetlands site, the restored
Golf Center and the future site of the
Tennis Center are destination
points
on the tour.
On May 20, 2008, representatives from
the Island’s
youth and adult leagues climbed on-board
as Aimee Boden detailed the status of
the Park’s project developments.
Joining the tour were:
Arlene Virga, Yorkville Youth Athletic
League; Bobby Hoffman, CYO Youth
Baseball; Eddy Collyns and Marc
Freedman, Manhattan Soccer Club; Toby
Butterfield, NY Rugby; Peter Strumph and
Eric Butte, Cosmopolitan Soccer; David
Tagle, Chilean Soccer League and Deputy
Inspector Ray Diaz and Raymond Evars of
the 25th Precinct.
On July 2, 2008,
Marion Bell, Chair of Community Board
11’s Randall’s Island Task Force and the
Parks Committee, was joined by
several CB 11 board members for a tour.
Attending with Ms. Bell were:
John Brown, Monica Brown, Diane Collier,
George Figueroa, Alvin Johnson, Francis
Mastrota, Marina Ortiz, Daniel Perez,
Deborah Quinones, Cora Shelton.
Elsie Carnacion from the office
of Councilwoman Melissa Mark Viverito
also attended.
On Wednesday, July 16, RISF hosted the
monthly meeting of the
Manhattan Waterfront Parks Coalition
and provided a tour of the park and a
presentation of current and future
plans. Attending were:
Hunter Armstrong, Mark Caserta, Tom
Lunke, Melissa McDonald, Gorman Reilly
and
Matthew Washington,
co-chair.
HAPPENINGS ON THE
ISLAND
Children from the Randall's
Island Kids Camp, including a
group from
Harlem Children's Zone (right), are
once again enjoying a summer of
instruction and recreational activities
at the park's facilities and natural
environments. Soccer, Softball,
Basketball, Track & Field, Lacrosse,
Tennis, Horseback, Volleyball, Kickball,
Nature Exploration, Physical Fitness,
Wiffleball, Frisbee, Golf, Mini-Golf,
and Dance, plus percussion on the camp's
new conga drums are among the programs
offered to kids from 25 neighboring
youth organizations in Harlem and the South Bronx. RISF Camp activities were featured this
month on
“News
12 Bronx”.
